A winner will be picked randomly and announced here on our blog January 24th, 2011.

Dear Cat Lovers

Is your cat a mackerel, ticked or spotted tabby?  Do you know the difference between van, harlequin and tuxedo colored cats?   Did you know that patches or swirls on a cat’s coat (the ones that look like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that have moved away from each other) are exactly that; solid color layers that cracked apart as the kitten embryo grew?

Cat lovers have got to check out this amazing Guide to Housecat Coat Colors and Patterns poster.  It shows an enormous range of  housecat coat and eye colors and patterns.  The chart includes groupings of colors and patterns along with lots of fascinating tidbits about the inheritance of these traits.  It’s quite a big chart (click on the image to see it full size), so it may take you a while to really  pore over it but you’ll be fascinated.  I spent all morning captivated by it and had fun looking for the best descriptions of our two store cats, Radio and Walter.  (See my results at the end of this post.)

Radio: bicolor Van?

Here’s Radio: From what I can tell he’s in the group “piebald/ bicolor/white spotted patterns” and is a Van.

Walter: broken mackerel brown tabby?

And Walter:  I think  he’s in the group “tabby patterns/broken mackerel” and is a brown tabby.

  1. My Lucie is a torbie, I think, maybe blue-cream type, but I’m not quite sure.

I would like to order this chart for our animal control. How much and how do I order?

  4. May I know why you are reposting my work without permission or credit, even though it’s said very clearly on it that reposting is not allowed? Either include a proper link to the poster’s home, which is majnouna.com/tutorials.html, and full credit to myself as the author, or take it down. I’m generally lenient when people ask for permission, but this kind of dishonest behavior is why I have bold, red warnings against thievery on all my charts.

Hello! Any idea what color tabby my new kitten is? I’m thinking a brown spotted tabby but he is very very dark.

  9. Hi Stephanie, we did the random drawing last week and the winner was emailed and announced here (above in the post). The winner was Leecia Price and when she came to Earth Pets to get her Gift Card she brought her rescued dog Buddy – Buddy got lots of yummy treats that day! 🙂

Phoebe is a Calico Tabby/Caliby – she looks so much like the “picture” on there that it is shocking!!! I find it funny because her paws and nose are “calico” as well!! She has green/yellow eyes.

She is crazy, but I love her! 😀

  12. My lovely Siberian (persian mix?) rescue kitty must be lilac mink – I thought the point stuff was confusing I didn’t know there was a mink part to this too. He also has the lynx/tabbie point a bit. I love this poster! Also I had no idea to count the skin/feet color in the determination.

Thank you for the poster and for the opportunity to win. Leecia

Ms. Kitty is a cream tabby. Very interesting chart, but left me a bit dazed.

My two boys are half-brothers. They are both classic tabbies with tuxedo whitespots. One is brown (though I would call him black, LOL) and the other is ginger. They both have hazel eyes. They both have pink pads on their feet, so that didn’t seem to fit in with the chart.

    That was fun! Thanks! :o)

Hi, I am Lucy. My owner thinks that I am very smart and asked me to match up my colors myself because I have much better vision than she does. I think that I am a Lilac Cream Torbie. I drool a lot when I am happy and then I think that my colors dilute a lil bit. Meow, meow….

Wiley is a brown mackerel tabby and my crazy orange cat Oranssi is actually a cream classic tabby.
